Hey everyone, David here, excited to be taking you through this week’s issue. If you recall from the other week, our beloved New Zealander, Sally, took you through that issue. We thought it would be interesting to rotate on who delivers this beautiful newsletter to your mailbox each time.
Ok, so on to what’s happening in Impact Tech…
It’s been a wild last couple weeks in tech in general. There’s certainly a lot to be watching: From Sam Bankman-Fried finally being arrested for his role in the collapse of crypto exchange FTX, to OpenAI’s new ChatGPT that’s been taking over the internet, and whatever is happening over at Twitter with Elon right now (it seems to be getting quite political so I won’t comment there 🤫).
This Week’s Ish
The recent events like FTX’s collapse and the free speech debate at Twitter are part of a larger trend towards transparency - particularly in radical form. I explore how technology is enabling new ways to support radical transparency and also prove or enforce it through technologies like blockchain and digital identity.
Kabir also continues his discussions on ocean conservation, this time exploring regenerative agriculture’s role in fixing ocean dead zones. It’s a great solution, but regenerative farmers face many challenges in scaling it. How might we overcome those challenges?
Also, as we continue to explore the renewed wave of excitement in AI, Benjamin gives us a look at how AI will impact recruiting, from candidate searching to job descriptions and even interviewing. For companies and non-profits, this obviously means more time to focus on impact. (Also, if you didn’t it, check out our article on some of what’s creating all this new excitement in AI - Generative AI - here).
Breaking News…
Scientists made a major breakthrough earlier this week: a nuclear fusion reaction generated more energy than was used to produce the reaction (i.e. unlimited clean energy potential).
However, it did not generate more than the reactor’s total energy use. But maybe don’t get too excited though, commercial trials are still decades off. Even with progress made in solar and wind technology, fossil fuels are so inexpensive that they will still be a fierce opponent to renewables including fusion for decades to come.
Most Impact•ish is Relaunching in January
We want to make sure that our content is top notch, so we decided to revamp and relaunch this segment next month to make it 10x better!
Kabir and I will be co-hosting this and we’ll be focused on interviewing the most impactful founders and investors in Impact Tech. More to come so stay tuned!
