The Impact of DEI on the Health of Your Business
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Tech Space
Hello and welcome to our initial series centered around DEI which stands for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. So let’s reduce any negative energy around these terms by simply explaining what they each mean.
What is the definition of DEI?
Diversity - All the ways in which people differ.
Equity - Fair treatment, access, opportunity and advancement for all people. Your identity cannot predict the outcome.
Inclusion - A variety of people have power, voice and decision making authority.
If you look at DAOs and the intention behind the concept of a DAO, DEI is sort of written in its code.
What’s the difference between diversity & inclusion?
Diversity and inclusion are two interconnected concepts — but they are far from interchangeable. Diversity is about representation or the make-up of an entity. Inclusion is about how well the contributions, presence and perspectives of different groups of people are valued and integrated into an environment.
A diverse and inclusive workplace is one that makes everyone, regardless of who they are or what they do for the business, feel equally involved in and supported in all areas of the workplace. The “all areas” part is important.
Why is diversity & inclusion in the workplace important?
Research has shown many benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace:
Higher revenue growth
Greater readiness to innovate
Increased ability to recruit a diverse talent pool
5.4X higher employee retention
Inclusion in the workplace is one of the most important keys to retention!
BetterUp.com published a great article last November by Allaya Cooks-Campbell that dives deeper into these themes. Its a great read here!
Coming Up!
In upcoming issues, we will dive deeper into this topic in hopes of normalizing and socializing these concepts to the point where Founders and Creators will never question the worth of having a fully versed DEI team but instead will find it absurd for companies to exist in this space without a well rounded team that embraces the DEI culture.
You will read from leading experts in the space and we will be here to offer advice on how to approach the topic within your teams.
